Taking part in parkrun has mental as well as physical benefits

A volunteer-led nationwide weekly running event is helping improve people’s psychological wellbeing and sense of community as well as their fitness, new research has found.

The free, timed 5km event, known as parkrun, started in one London park in 2004, but has now spread to more than 200 locations around the UK as well as seven other countries.

Now academics from Loughborough University and Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust have published the first analysis of parkrun’s benefits for participants.
