When Brazil was awarded the 2014 World Cup in October 2007, FIFA president Sepp Blatter predicted it would have “a big social and cultural impact” for the country.
Brazil – winners of five World Cups in foreign lands – would finally have a chance to showcase the country that produced so many football superstars.
But the recent protests have shown that many Brazilians want social and cultural changes of a kind the World Cup cannot bring – and they want to make sure Blatter and the world know it.
