Britons waste 131kg of food each per year – worst in Europe

Britons each throw away food equivalent to nearly double the average adult’s body weight every year, a new international food ranking system reveals.

The UK is “one of the worst offenders” for food waste by individuals, with the average person wasting 131.5kg of food a year – putting the UK 19th out of 25 countries worldwide.

These findings come from the first Food Sustainability Index, commissioned by the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition (BCFN) Foundation and researched by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

France came first in the overall index for nutrition, sustainable agriculture and food waste with the UK in fifth place.
